The Backstory

Listening to My Audience

I loved the first edition’s cover, which is pictured to the right. However, I got a lot of feedback that it was:

  • too feminine,
  • too busy
  • and not serious enough.

It turned many readers away. So, for the second edition’s cover, I wanted something that was:

  • Simple and modern.
  • Clean and professional.
  • Appealed to authors, speakers, and coaches of all genders.

My first stab at such a cover came up with the following:

Home Sweet Home Page, 2nd Edition, Cover Concept 2
Home Sweet Home Page, 2nd Edition, Cover Concept 3

After several attempts to design the cover on my own, and several rounds of running voting polls on Facebook–all with less than satisfactory results, I decided to hold a cover contest on 99Designs. There were several designs I liked, and the one that got the most votes from my email list and social media followers was not necessarily the one I would have chosen, but in the end, I think I chose well. It still may be a touch on the feminine side, but that’s OK because the vast majority of my clients are women. But I don’t think it turns off men because my husband helped me pick it out!
